Maroneia

Silver Tetradrachm of Maroneia, a Greek city of Thrace said to have been founded, according to legend, by Maron, a priest of Dionysos. Located on the northern coast of the Aegean Sea, near Abdera, Maroneia was famous in antiquity for its renowned wine. This close connection to the cult of Dionysos is clearly reflected in this coin: on the obverse, a realistic-style laureate portrait of the god; on the reverse, Dionysos standing, holding a bunch of grapes and a kantharos.
