Superb feudal coin from the Bishopric of Valence (Dauphiné).

This is a silver gros struck during the episcopate of Jean de Genève. The obverse features a spread eagle, a symbol of power and authority.

Jean de Genève, son of Count Amédée II of Geneva, was appointed to the episcopal see of Valence by Pope Martin IVon February 15, 1285. This coinage reflects the political and spiritual importance of the bishop in the Dauphiné at the end of the 13ᵗʰ century. (Reference: Chareyron)
