Certificat PCGS

The “Cérès” type was introduced during the Second French Republic (1848–1852), a short but significant period of political transition following the Revolution of 1848, which ended the July Monarchy and preceded the rise of the Second Empire.

The image of Cérès, Roman goddess of agriculture and harvest, symbolizes fertility, nourishment, and republican stability. Her serene portrait, crowned with wheat ears, was meant to convey reassurance and unity in a time of political uncertainty.

This design was engraved by Eugène-André Oudiné, a renowned medalist and engraver for the Paris Mint. His work reflects a blend of classical influence and modern republican ideals, aiming to root the new Republic in tradition while signaling a break from monarchical imagery.
