Ælia Flavia Flacilla was the first wife of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. She died around 385 AD. Known and celebrated for her deep Christian piety and generosity towards the poor, she was praised by Saint Ambrose and Gregory of Nyssa as a ‘pillar of the Church’ and still features among the saints in the Greek liturgy
