Silver tetradrachm of Alexander III king of Macedon, coin struck under Antipater in Amphipolis circa 325-322 BC.

Antipater (c. 397–319 BC) was a Macedonian general and regent under Alexander the Great. A loyal lieutenant of Philip II, he became one of Alexander’s key administrators and ensured the stability of Macedonia during the Asian campaigns. After Alexander’s death in 323 BC, he was appointed regent of the empire and faced the rebellion of the Greek cities during the Lamian War. He transferred power to Polyperchon in 319 BC, excluding his own son Cassander, which triggered new succession struggles.
