Nicomedia (ancient Greek Νικομήδεια, Nikomêdeia), now known as İzmit, is a historic city located in present-day Turkey, about 100 kilometers east of Istanbul. The city was founded in 264 BC by Nicomedes I, king of Bithynia, who made it the capital of his kingdom. The city was named in his honor. Under the Bithynian kings, Nicomedia flourished due to its strategic location near the Sea of Marmara and its ports, which facilitated maritime trade.
