Obverse legend

CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE

Reverse legend

AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT / C L CAESARES

Very beautiful denarius of Augustus, of high quality and elegant style, a silver coin struck in Lugdunum in 2 BC. Gaius and Lucius on the reverse, holding shields.

Gaius and Lucius Caesar were the grandsons and designated heirs of Emperor Augustus. Sons of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and Julia the Elder, they were adopted by Augustus to secure the succession. Promoted to high positions from a young age, their premature deaths (Gaius in 4 AD and Lucius in 2 AD) disrupted Augustus’ plans. Their passing paved the way for Tiberius to become the official successor. Their memory was honored on Roman coins and monuments.
