The Exeter crown of 1644, struck under Charles I during the English Civil War (1625–1649), is a Royalist issue produced in the fortified city of Exeter, in Devon, then held by the king’s supporters. The coin was minted under the authority of Sir Richard Vyvyan, the Royalist governor of the city, at a time when Charles I no longer controlled the Royal Mint in London. These coins, often of high quality, were struck to help finance the Royalist war effort, and their production reflects the urgency and military context of the period.
