A serrated denarius is a Roman silver coin whose edge is cut into small, regular notches, giving it a toothed appearance, like a wheel or a saw (serra in Latin).
These notches were primarily intended to demonstrate that the coin was made of solid silver and not plated over a base-metal core. By exposing the edge, they helped to prevent counterfeiting and to reassure users.
