Description
Denarius of the Roman Republic struck by the moneyer L. Plautius Hypsaeus of the Plautia family in 60 BC. On the obverse, the diademed head of Leuconoë facing right, with a small dolphin behind; on the reverse, Jupiter driving a quadriga.
Leuconoë is a poetic figure mentioned by Horace in Ode I, 11, famous for the maxim carpe diem. She represents the reader to whom the poet advises not to seek knowledge of the future and to fully enjoy the present.
