Famous silver tetradrachm struck at Thasos circa 148–80 BC. The obverse depicts a portrait of Dionysus crowned with ivy, while the reverse shows Heracles with the legend HΡAKΛEOΥΣ – ΣΩTHΡOΣ / ΘAΣIΩN.
Thasos is a Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea, known in antiquity for its rich mineral resources and commercial importance. Founded by colonists from Paros in the 7th century BC, it became a prosperous regional power. Its wealth is notably reflected in its abundant and influential coinage.
