This Ostrogothic tremissis issued in the name of Justinian I, struck during the reign of Athalaric, illustrates the transition period between Rome and the barbarian kingdoms in the 6th century.

Although the Ostrogoths ruled Italy at the time, they continued to mint coins in the name of the Byzantine emperor, as a symbol of imperial legitimacy.
