Drachm of Alexander the Great. Coin struck at Sardes circa 324–323 BC under Menander. Head of Heracles facing right on the obverse, and seated Zeus on the reverse, with monogram EY to the left and the legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ behind the throne.

Sardes was a major ancient city of Asia Minor, capital of the kingdom of Lydia and famous for its legendary wealth. Located at the foot of Mount Tmolus, it was one of the earliest monetary centers, associated with the first issues in electrum. The city retained its importance under Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman rule.
