Reverse legend |
On this denarius, Augustus celebrates the honors bestowed upon him by the Roman Senate on January 16, 27 BC: the corona civica, or civic crown made of oak leaves. This crown was usually awarded to a soldier who had saved the life of a comrade in battle. In this particular case, it symbolizes Octavian having saved the entire state. The laurels represent those planted in front of Augustus’ house and symbolize honor and respect.
