Follis of the Roman emperor Diocletian, bronze coin struck around 295–299 in Ticinum. Diocletian is the only Roman emperor known to have voluntarily retired. In 305 AD, he abdicated and withdrew to his palace in Split (modern-day Croatia), where he famously devoted himself to gardening, setting a rare precedent of peaceful retirement from absolute power.
