Silver denarius of Severus Alexander, struck in 231 in Rome.
In 231, the Roman Empire faced a major threat in the East: King Ardashir I had just founded the Sasanian Empire (replacing the Parthians) and was launching aggressive campaigns against Roman territories in Mesopotamia.
In response, Severus Alexander initiated a major military expedition against the Sasanians, planning a three-pronged offensive (North, Center, and South).
Although the military results were mixed, imperial propaganda proclaimed victory in order to preserve the emperor’s authority.
