Description

Denarius of the Roman Republic issued by the moneyers Q. Fufius Calenus and Mucius Cordus in 70 BC. On the obverse, conjoined busts facing right of Honos, laureate, and Virtus, helmeted; on the reverse, Italia standing left, turned to the right, and Roma standing to the right.

The year 70 BC corresponds to the consulship of Pompey and Crassus.

A serrated denarius is a Roman silver coin whose edge is cut into small, regular notches, giving it a toothed appearance, like a wheel or a saw (serra in Latin).

These notches were primarily intended to demonstrate that the coin was made of solid silver and not plated over a base-metal core. By exposing the edge, they helped to prevent counterfeiting and to reassure users.
