Obverse legend

Reverse legend

Rare denarius of Sextus Pompey, silver coin struck in Sicily around 42–40 BC.

This denarius of Sextus Pompey features two powerful maritime symbols linked to Sicily. The lighthouse of Messina, one of the oldest in the ancient world, guided ships through the perilous strait between Italy and Sicily. On the reverse, Scylla, the mythical sea monster, embodies the dangers of these waters. Together, they reflect Sextus Pompey’s naval power and his control over the Mediterranean.
