The 500 franc "Drapeau" banknote type 1944 is a French banknote issued at the end of the Second World War. It was created for use during the liberation of France and symbolised the return of French authority.
It is printed in the United States at the request of the Provisional Government of the French Republic led by Charles de Gaulle.
The banknote is nicknamed "flag" because its main motif uses the colours of the French flag with a very simple and patriotic style. It circulated briefly in 1944-1945, then was gradually replaced by notes issued by the Banque de France.
