In 1551, a third, more efficient mint was established at the western tip of the Île de la Cité: the “Maison des Étuv es” or “Moulin” mint. This workshop benefited from the mechanization of coin production using the screw press, the cutter, and the rolling mill, all imported from Germany. As this new mint was placed directly under the King’s control rather than that of the Cour des Monnaies (a sovereign court since 1552 dedicated to matters of monetary justice and the protection of workers, located in the Palais de la Cité), numerous conflicts arose between the two institutions. The Cour des Monnaies saw this mechanization as a reduction of its authority.
