The plaques of the Carnegie Foundation bearing the inscription “To the Heroes of Civilization” were awarded in tribute to acts of civilian bravery — that is, to individuals who risked or sacrificed their lives to save others, outside any military context.
Founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1904 (and in France in 1909) under the name Carnegie Foundation for the Recognition of Civilian Heroes, this initiative aimed to honor selfless courage, often overlooked by official institutions.
Plaque awarded to Fargier (F) in 1934.
