This silver jeton from 1706 was struck for the Royal Artillery service under the authority of Louis Auguste de Bourbon, Duke of Maine, the legitimized son of Louis XIV.
At that time, artillery played a strategic role in the wars of the Sun King, particularly during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714). This jeton reflects the growing prestige of this military corps and the central role of the Duke of Maine in its organization. The reverse depicts a fortified enclosure.
