Description
Charles IV (1604-1675) was the Duke of Lorraine and Bar, known for his turbulent nature and fluctuating alliances, particularly against France during the Thirty Years’ War.
Expelled from his duchies by Louis XIII in 1634, he lived the life of a soldier and military leader in exile. In 1638, he “held a few strongholds” (like Remiremont), where he minted coins, demonstrating his attempt to maintain his authority and rights, even partially, against the French occupation. He spent most of his life trying to recover his duchies.
