Description
Japanese 1 Yen Silver Coin, Struck in 1895 (Meiji 28) and Countermarked for Foreign Circulation
This 1895 (Meiji 28) Japanese Silver Yen coin was countermarked (stamped with the “Gin” or Silver mark) after Japan adopted the gold standard in 1897. The countermark officially withdrew the coin from domestic circulation but maintained its status and value for international trade, especially in the Far East.
