Billon stater of the Veneti tribe. Class V ‘wheel type’ stater struck around 80–50 BC. Small chip at 3 o’clock on the reverse.

Provenance: MDC Monaco sale 9, lot 43 / Piolaine Hoard (2011) dispersed at Drouot on 5 March 2020.

This specimen comes from the Piolaine hoard discovered in 2011 at Saint-Aubin-du-Pavail, part of which entered the MAN (ref. 6579–7066), while the owner’s share was dispersed at Drouot on 5 March 2020. The esse issuing from the charioteer’s mouth is quite exceptional and appears in the published portion of the hoard in the Musée des Antiquités Nationales on only four examples (nos. 7042, 7044–7045, and 7056)

Allectus was the successor and assassin of Carausius, the rebel emperor of Britain. After Carausius’s murder in AD 293, he took control of the Romano-British realm. He continued the policy of independence from Rome for several years. His coins, often struck in London, proclaim his imperial legitimacy. Carausius was a Roman officer of Belgian origin who proclaimed himself emperor in Britain around AD 286. Formerly commander of the fleet tasked with combating pirates, he seized power after being accused of treason. He established an independent realm encompassing Britain and part of northern Gaul. Carausius struck his own coinage and sought to legitimize his rule by imitating Roman imperial propaganda. He was eventually assassinated in 293 by his minister Allectus, who succeeded him.

Around AD 270–272, the Roman Empire was going through a period of great political instability.

After the death of Claudius II Gothicus, Aurelian became emperor (270–275). At the same time, the Empire was divided:

  • In the West, the Gallic Empire.

  • In the East, the Palmyrene Kingdom, ruled by Zenobia on behalf of her young son, Vaballathus.

Zenobia gradually took control of Egypt and Syria while maintaining a façade of loyalty to Rome. At first, coins struck in the East bore the portrait of Aurelian on the obverse and that of Vaballathus on the reverse — a symbol of “alliance” or political duality.

But this diplomatic façade concealed an attempt at independence: before long, Vaballathus assumed imperial titles, and Zenobia was defeated by Aurelian in 272.
