M. Brett, in the 1955 catalog of Greek coins from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, had already noted the similarity between the zigzags at the base of the crest and those found on archaic Athenian tetradrachms. It therefore seems that this coin was directly inspired by these tetradrachms.

Cyzicus was a Greek city in Mysia, located on the Propontis (modern-day Sea of Marmara). It was founded by Ionian Greeks from the city of Miletus in 756 BCE. According to legend, the city was built by Cyzicus, son of Apollo, who came from Thessaly accompanied by the Pelasgians. They were later driven out by the Lydians, who in turn were expelled by the citizens of Miletus. (Source: Wikipedia)

Stater of the Gallic tribe of the Carnutes struck in pale gold, with a head facing right on the obverse and a biga driven by a charioteer on the reverse.

Pedigree: Argenor auction, April 23, 1999, Lot 233 (9,600 francs).

The Carnutes were a powerful Gallic tribe located between the Seine and the Loire, with main centers at Cenabum (Orléans) and Autricum (Chartres). They played a major religious role, as their territory hosted the central druidic sanctuary of Gaul. In 52 BC, they sparked the general revolt against Rome by massacring Roman merchants in Cenabum. Julius Caesar crushed the uprising, and their submission marked a turning point in the Roman conquest of Gaul.

Gold stater of the Gallic tribe of the Arverni. Apollonian head facing left on the obverse; horse facing right on the reverse, with a charioteer above and a lyre below.

The Arverni were one of the most powerful Gallic tribes of central Gaul, established in what is now the Auvergne region. Their capital was Gergovia, renowned for the victory of Vercingetorix over Julius Caesar in 52 BC. Wealthy and influential, the Arverni dominated other tribes prior to the Roman conquest. They fiercely resisted Rome, especially during the Gallic Wars. After their defeat, they were integrated into the Roman Empire but retained a degree of local autonomy.

Roman gold coin struck under Emperor Nero in 65 AD in Rome. Even wear and a light scratch on the reverse. The reverse legend means:

“He closed the Temple of Janus, peace having been achieved on land and at sea.”

The Temple of Janus was one of Rome’s most ancient centers of worship. It was said that Romulus had built it after he made peace with the Sabines, and that it was king Numa who decreed that its doors should be opened during times of war and shut during times of peace. In all of Roman history until the reign of Nero, the temple doors had been shut perhaps five or six times – once under king Numa (who originated the tradition), once at the end of the Second Punic War, three times under Augustus, and, according to Ovid, once under Tiberius.

In AD 65, when peace had been generally established in the Empire, Nero understandably requested the closing of the temple’s doors. He marked the event with great celebrations and trumpeted his policy of peace by issuing a large and impressive series of coins. The inscription on this issue announces “the doors of Janus have been closed after peace has been procured for the Roman People on the land and on the sea. The doors of the temple probably remained closed for less than a year, being opened again with the onset of strife in Judaea in 66

The temple of Janus was built by Numa Pompilius (716-673 BC). The doors were opened to indicate that Rome was at war and closed during times of peace. Since the time of Numa and before the time of Nero, the doors were said to have been closed only in 235 BC, after the first Punic war; and three times during the reign of Augustus.

Following the favourable end to a war with Parthia in 63 thanks to the efforts of the general Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo, and the general establishment of peace across Rome’s borders by 65, Nero famously closed the doors to great fanfare in AD 66 as a sign that all war was at an end.

Emperor Hadrian was a great admirer of Hercules, the mythological Greek figure symbolizing strength and virtue. Hadrian saw Hercules as a model of the ideal emperor, combining physical power and wisdom. He commissioned numerous statues and temples dedicated to Hercules throughout the Roman Empire, particularly in Tivoli, where his villa was located. This connection was also a way for Hadrian to legitimize himself as emperor by associating with a recognized heroic and divine figure
