Julia Maesa, of Syrian origin, was Roman empress from 218 to 224. Sister-in-law of Septimius Severus and aunt of Caracalla, she was sent back to Syria after the assassination of the latter in 217. She regained power on behalf of her young grandsons, Elagabalus and Severus Alexander, and ruled in their place.
