Gold stater of the Gallic tribe of the Arverni. Apollonian head facing left on the obverse; horse facing right on the reverse, with a charioteer above and a lyre below.

The Arverni were one of the most powerful Gallic tribes of central Gaul, established in what is now the Auvergne region. Their capital was Gergovia, renowned for the victory of Vercingetorix over Julius Caesar in 52 BC. Wealthy and influential, the Arverni dominated other tribes prior to the Roman conquest. They fiercely resisted Rome, especially during the Gallic Wars. After their defeat, they were integrated into the Roman Empire but retained a degree of local autonomy.
