The Salyens (or Salluvii) were a Gaulish tribe settled in Provence, around present-day Aix-en-Provence. They belonged to the Celto-Ligurian cultural sphere and often clashed with the Greek colony of Massalia (Marseille) over control of trade routes. In 125 BC they were defeated by the Romans, marking the beginning of Roman expansion in southern Gaul. After their subjugation, the Salyens were incorporated into the province of Gallia Narbonensis
