Silver denarius of the Roman Republic, a coin struck under the moneyer C. Norbanus in 83 BC. The obverse depicts Venus (a protective deity, but also—ironically—the favorite goddess of his enemy Sulla). The reverse attempts to project Republican stability (grain for food supply, the caduceus for concord) at a time when Italy is descending into bloodshed.
