A French territory since 1638, the island of Bourbon took the name ‘Île de la Réunion’ in 1793 (in memory of the union of the Marseillais and the National Guards on August 10, 1792), changed it to ‘Île Bonaparte’ in 1806, and reverted to ‘Île Bourbon’ in 1814. In 1848, the island was definitively named ‘Île de la Réunion’
