French Feudal coin, Billon obol struck in Viviers under the episcopate of Aldebert de Peyre (1297–1306), a member of the powerful Peyre family. This feudal coin reflects the right to mint currency granted to the Bishopric of Viviers as early as the 12th century, confirmed by the Holy Roman Emperors. On the obverse, the legend “A·EPISCOPI” surrounds a cross; on the reverse, an episcopal crozier appears with the inscription “VIVARIEN.” Aldebert de Peyre, loyal to King Philip the Fair of France, played a key political role in integrating the Vivarais region into the royal domain.
