The "Miracle of Saint Eustache" refers to a Christian legend in which Saint Eustache sees a deer appear bearing a luminous cross between its antlers, a divine sign. This vision leads him and his family to convert to Christianity. The episode symbolises revelation and faith in the face of trial.
The churchwarden, in medieval Latin the matricularius, is first and foremost "one who keeps a register or a roll", and is a member of the parish council.
