The medal was struck in 1829 by the Department of the Nord to honor the memory of Charles-Ferdinand d’Artois, Duke of Berry, who was assassinated in Paris on February 13, 1820. He was the nephew of King Louis XVIII and a potential heir to the French throne, which made his assassination particularly significant for the Bourbon Restoration.
