The RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) was the largest constituent republic of the Soviet Union, established after the Russian Revolution of 1917. Officially founded in 1918, it was the cradle of the Soviet regime, playing a central role in the politics, economy, and culture of the USSR until its dissolution in 1991. It covered a vast portion of the former Russian Empire’s territory and had Moscow as its capital. After the USSR’s collapse, it became the Russian Federation, retaining its status as a sovereign state.
Coins bearing the RSFSR coat of arms were minted between 1921 and 1923 in preparation for a future currency exchange. They were put into circulation in 1924, alongside coins featuring the USSR coat of arms. From 1924 to 1961, both types of coins circulated simultaneously, although starting in 1927, silver 50 kopeks and rubles began to disappear from circulation.
