This gold florin was struck in Utrecht during the reign of David of Burgundy, prince-bishop of the Burgundian Netherlands from 1456 to 1496. A member of the House of Burgundy, David was the illegitimate son of Philip the Good. His florin reflects the political and economic influence of the region, then under Burgundian control.
