This 1 penny copper token, struck in 1862 in Hobart (Tasmania), is a typical example of merchant tokens issued in colonial Australia to compensate for the lack of official coinage. Used as local currency, the obverse usually bears the inscription “ONE PENNY TOKEN PAYABLE AT…” followed by the merchant’s name, such as Joseph Moir or William Jarvey. The reverse often indicates the issuer’s trade (ironmonger, draper, etc.). These tokens reflect the economic resourcefulness of the 19th-century colonies. Measuring about 34 mm in diameter, they are now sought after for their rarity, local historical value, and distinct Victorian charm.
